BEST OF WHAT’S NEW
Submissions for the Best Of What’s New 2021 awards is now closed.
Here at Popular Science, we love geeking out about breakthrough research and finding compelling science, tech, and DIY angles to mainstream topics. We’re authoritative without taking ourselves too seriously (it’s why we’ve stuck around for 150 years), and we like writing about weird animals as much as about the ongoing climate crisis. To help us in this quest, PopSci hires interns throughout the year to work with us remotely. Please note, all applicants need to have work authorization in the US and be able to work East Coast hours.
The position can be part-time or full-time for roughly 12 weeks, though we’re flexible on exact dates. Primary duties encompass writing for both the website and the quarterly digital magazine. That includes news stories, service guides, creative explainers, front-of-book pieces, and sidebars, as well as learning how to fact check, managing CMS duties, and participating in big editorial brainstorms. When time and resources allow, interns may also work on graphics, be on our podcasts, embark on a longer, feature-length project, and more.
The relatively small staff and open atmosphere at PopSci give interns access to all parts of the magazine-making and website-running processes. We are big fans of self-starters, so interns are encouraged to pitch ideas for any section and chase down their own work from editors. You can plan day-long reporting trips, sit in on pitch meetings, attend media-only events, and more. If you want to get involved with something, we can usually make it happen!
Ideal intern candidates have a passion for science reporting in the fields of health, environment, technology, DIY, physics, sustainability, and/or consumer goods, as well as a demonstrated interest in magazine, online, and/or multimedia journalism.
Interns are paid $15 an hour for their work. Applications are accepted for summer (which runs from roughly May through August), fall (roughly September through December), and spring (roughly January through April). We’re flexible on start and end dates.
Deadlines are as follows:
-Summer: due March 15
-Fall: due July 15
-Spring: due November 15
To apply, please send a one-page cover letter, a resume, and links to three to five writing samples by email to firstname.lastname@example.org with “internship application” in the subject line. Make sure to indicate which term/semester you’d like to apply for in the subject line as well.
